Etiology of the Rothbarts Foot - Talar Supinatus
Homo Erectus approximately 1.3 million years ago (Courtesy of El Museo de la Evolucion Humana)

Exploding Foot ModelIf the talar head does not complete its torsional development, it maintains a twist in the head.  This twist is referred to as Talar Supinatus.

If the talar bone does not complete its ontogenetic (embryological) development:
  • It maintains a twist in the head of the talar bone
  • This twist in the talar head is referred to as talar supinatus which is the etiology (cause) of the Rothbarts Foot

If the talar bone does complete its ontogenetic development:
  • The talar head has fully unwound
  • The foot is structurally stable; that is, the big toe rests on the ground when the foot is placed in its anatomical neutral position
