Ptosis - What is it and how it can be naturally treated

Ptosis is dropping of the upper eyelid. The lid may droop only slightly or it may cover the pupil entirely.  In some cases ptosis can restrict and even block normal vision.  Ptosis can cause amblyopia (lazy eye) and if left untreated can lead to a permanent deterioration in vision.

  • In children, ptosis is usually the result of a weak levator muscle, which lifts the eyelid.
  • In adults, ptosis is commonly due to a separation of the levator muscle from the eyelid as a result of aging, cataract surgery, an injury or an eye tumor.

Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy (which incorporates proprioceptive stimulation) has proven to be a safe, natural and effective therapy for reversing ptosis; and which, in many cases, eliminates the need for surgical intervention (See Photos below).

Pre Proprioceptive Stimulation             Post Proprioceptive Stimulation

Protocol Followed for Taking Photos:
(1) Camera mounted on tripod
(2) Patient is instructed to stand relaxed and look straight forward.  Pre Stimulation photo is taken.
(3) Without the patient moving, the proprioceptive insoles are placed underneath the patient's feet.
(4) Patient flexes the knees 5-6 times, each time placing weight over the ball of the foot.  This maneuver augments the proprioceptive stimulation.
(5) Patient is again instructed to stand relaxed and look straight forward.  Second (Post Stimulation) photo is taken.

However, if the proprioceptive signal is too strong, it can result in overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (e.g., pupil dilatation) (See Animation below).

When the appropriate proprioceptive signal is applied to the bottom of the foot, it can reverse ptosis (open the eyes). However, if the signal is too strong, it can dilate the pupil(s) (e.g., over stimulate the sympathetic nervous system).
