Dental Occlusion (Bite) is Impacted by Foot Motion

During adolescence, foot motion (aka foot twist or foot pronation) impacts:
  • the width of the upper and lower dental arch
  • the position of the teeth
  • tongue mobility, and
  • the position of the mandible.

IN A PURE ASCENDING POSTURAL PATTERN:
  • If the foot motion is Hip Driven:
    • the dental arches are open and normally developed, and
    • there is no lateral shift in the mandible relative to the maxilla (See Photo below left).
  • If the foot motion is Gravity Driven:
    • the dental arches are abnormally narrowed resulting in crowding or blocking of the teeth and constriction of the tongue, and
    • there is a lateral shift in the mandible relative to the maxilla (See Photo below right).(Rothbart, 2008).
