Surgery

In children and adults
, ptosis is commonly treated by surgically shortening the levator muscle.  In severe cases, the lid is attached (suspended) from under the eyebrow so that the forehead muscles do the lifting.

The risks of ptosis surgery include infection, bleeding and reduced vision.  Although improvement of the lid height is usually achieved, in many cases the cosmetic result is less than desirable, giving the eye a buldging (abnormally open) appearance (See Animation below).

Because the cosmetic and functional outcome of upper eyelid surgery is uncertain and problematic, many health care providers are now recommending the more natural and less invasive approach, proprioceptive therapy, to reverse ptosis.
